Politics and Religion: Two things you are not supposed to talk about with company

I think Rev. Jeffress calling Mormonism (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) a cult and non-christian was the straw that broke the camel's back for a lot of people. All over the internet there are people voicing the opinion that the religion of a candidate should not be the focus of the presidential race.

I say amen to that.

I am not going to vote for someone because they are or are not Mormon, just as I don't vote for someone because they belong to one party or another, or because of their race, etc. A candidates actions and political positions should be what people look at to decide who to vote for. And I am not the only one saying so. Here are a few of my favorites:

Don't judge candidates by their faith (REALLY good article by William Bennett)

Just for the Record: Anti-Mormonism is Bigotry Too (by James Fallows, who doesn't like Romney politically, but hates bigotry all the same.)

Anderson Cooper and Rev. Jeffress (This video made me laugh. Cooper interviews Jeffress and can't get a good answer as to why he thinks Mormons are non-christian and belong to a cult.)

On a very related point, although I don't think religion should be the focus of a presidential debate, I do think that false information should be corrected.

I am a Mormon, meaning that I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I believe that Jesus Christ is my personal Savior. I believe that the Bible is the word of God. I also believe that as there were prophets in biblical times there are prophets today. I also believe that the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ that goes hand-in-hand with the Bible.

I strongly believe that whenever people are looking for the truth they should go to the source. For example: if you want the truth about Mormons, ask a Mormon or go here (or click the "We belong" button to the right). Don't believe what someone else says about what we believe or do. Ask us.

P.S. I also really like what my friend Nate had to say about Jeffress' comments and the Book of Mormon. To read it visit his blog here.

P.P.S. Tomorrow we will return to our regularly scheduled, lighter, posts. But I just had to put my two bits in on this one. I take my faith personally and don't like it when someone who doesn't know what they are talking about tries to tell the world what I believe.

Thanks, Katie, for the shout out!

Your point about asking members of a faith to explain their faith instead of going to their enemies to explain it is very good.

We sure enjoy reading your updates, especially about little Charlie.

I needed that. I get bombarded all the time by fellow voters of both sides. Sometimes people at church use it as a platform for their ideas to be heard. I like to have my ideas but voting because they are or are not a certain anything drives me crazy. Stick to your standards and vote for what you feel would support those.
