Life has Loveliness to Sell

I haven't written in a while because I have had "blogger's block." That is when I can't think of anything particular about my life at the moment that I think you all would be interested in. I go to school, work, study, sleep, try to fit three meals a day in there somewhere, and generally have an all around great time. Really life is great. Which brings me to the topic of my post today: Life has loveliness to sell. That is the first line of one of my all time favorite poems, and it has been going through my head quite frequently lately. Here it is for your reading pleasure. I hope you all see the loveliness around you.

Barter
By:Sara Teasdale

Life has loveliness to sell,
All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
Soaring fire that sways and sings,
And children's faces looking up
Holding wonder like a cup.

Life has loveliness to sell,
Music like a curve of gold,
Scent of pine trees in the rain,
Eyes that love you, arms that hold,
And for your spirit's still delight,
Holy thoughts that star the night.

Spend all you have for loveliness,
Buy it and never count the cost;
For one white singing hour of peace
Count many a year of strife well lost,
And for a breath of ecstasy
Give all you have been, or could be.

Katie, what a timely poem. Would you believe you are helping inspire me about my BFA project? It shouldn't be surprising, though. You have always been a source of inspiration to me.

Hi Katie!

You took me back to my "Sara Teasdale Days". I was a 17 year-old college freshman and thought Sara Teasdales love poems were divine till my English major roomie explained what the poems were really saying! It was devistating.

Here's one of my old favorites.

Song
You bound strong sandals on my feet,
You gave me bread and wine,
And sent me under sun and stars,
For all the world was mine.

Oh, take the sandals off my feet,
You know not what you do;
For all my world is in your arms,
My sun and stars are you.

Mushy, I know, but oh so fun!

Thanks for sharing that one Patti. I haven't heard it before, and I must admit, I am a sucker for mushy Sara Teasdale love poems. There it is. I am such a sap.
